Inwood House Convenes City-Wide Dialogue on Teen Pregnancy Prevention and InterventionA call to action: More than 8,000 births to NYC teens annually
On November 16th, 2010, Inwood House convened a City-Wide Dialogue to ensure NYC teens have access to comprehensive sexuality education and quality reproductive health services. More than 200 stakeholders representing local, state, and national government agencies, community-based service providers, philanthropy, youth, parents, and universities of public health, education, and social service addressed the service, public policy, and funding aspects with the goal of creating an integrated blueprint for action.
"Teenage pregnancy is empirically linked to persistent child and family poverty. More than eight thousand babies are born to teens in NYC every year. Our teen pregnancy rate far outpaces the nation’s. It is time for unified action,” says Inwood House Executive Director Linda Lausell Bryant who is leading the effort. “We have the best talent and expertise to solve this problem right here. The overwhelming response to participate in this City-Wide Dialogue says we have the will. We now need a blueprint and resources for lasting impact. We are very grateful to the Tiger Foundation for providing funds to help us launch this initiative.“
The Dialogue was an all-day interactive event culminating in a Town Hall-style session setting blueprint priorities. In the days and weeks ahead, we will be announcing next steps in creating and bringing the blueprint to fruition. Stay tuned!
Again, our thanks to the Tiger Foundation, our Steering Committee, our speakers, to all those who attended for their participation and support.
